Volunteerism - the foundation of our community

 We cannot overstate the importance of community involvement through volunteerism; it is the foundation of a healthy and vibrant community, providing a sense of connectedness and civic pride among us all. 

You may remember a sign in the Metrodome that proudly proclaimed: “WE LIKE IT HERE.” That sign has been removed, but the sentiment remains. The more we volunteer, the more we like it here. And the more we like it here, the more we volunteer.

Creating jobs is a top priority for McFarlane

Recent surveys show that Minnesotans are most concerned about jobs and the economy. A recent random survey of House District 53B confirmed those results apply locally.

When the economy slows down, so do tax collections. The sluggish housing market and mortgage crisis, as well as rising prices in health care, transportation, energy, food, etc., all impact our families and businesses. Job creation efforts are vital to stimulate the state's economy to reverse the downward trend.

Reflections of Independence Day

Published in Press Publications newspapers – week of July 4, 2008

As we are approaching July 4th, I have been reflecting on what Independence Day means to me. I would encourage you to take a few moments to do the same. 

For many, it is a day to celebrate our country's birthday with long time traditions of parades, picnics and fireworks. The 4th of July became a significant holiday for the United States of America in the early 1800s.   Families and friends were drawn together to celebrate their religious, personal and economic freedoms.

2008 Environmental Statement

Having served in the Minnesota House of Representatives for two years, I am proud of recent legislative accomplishments and my voting record on issues supporting the environment and protection of Minnesota's natural resources.

The 2007 session brought about renewable energy standards with aggressive goals for renewables. The e-waste legislation passed in 2007 will help ensure proper recycling of electronics and help relieve counties of the cost and responsibility for proper disposal of used electronics. Additionally we appropriated over $54 million for Clean Water Legacy. I supported and voted for these and other environmental initiatives.
